A FATAL Mistake that Most People do when they Join a new Company

What I am going to write in this article is sad, but unfortunately, it’s the truth in most cases.

If you are planning to move to a new company and to have a fresh start, then there is one fatal mistake that I advise you not to do because it can cost you a lot in the long term.

And this fatal mistake is ‘’revealing your intentions’’.

As an example, you are a person who likes stability and staying at the same company for a long time. So, in the interview, you use the opportunity to tell this to your interviewer and later when you are hired, to your boss.

You think deep inside of you that being honest and revealing your intentions, especially if your intentions are to stay, will make them happy and appreciative of your efforts. But unfortunately, it is rarely the case.

Most managers will abuse the situation if they ever heard a piece of information like this, especially if they saw this clearly reflected in your attitude and that you are not the guy or lady who would like to change your company or relocate.

I have some extra work to be finished? Then I will hand this work over to you, no matter if you like it or not. And why shouldn’t I? In the end, I know that you will not think about leaving.

You do not like the way that I deal with you? And why should I change it? I know you will not leave.

Do you want a salary increase? No, I will not offer you. And why should I do it? I do not want to give you, and you will not leave.

I see this mistake happening A LOT, especially from people in their 30s and 40s.

They are usually married, and they have kids or expecting a baby, so they think about stability. So, they move to a new company with a better workload seeking more stability, and reveal their intentions in their interview to their bosses, while believing that nothing is wrong with that…which is not the case.

Same thing with your intentions regarding growth. If you are an ambitious person, and you want to climb the career ladder fast, then do not reveal your intentions and be neutral.

You may think that showing that you want to grow fast will make them feel that you are a hard worker and appreciate you more or even offer you better jobs, which in most cases is not.

If you showed a high energy level, drive, and willingness to succeed and climb the career ladder fast, a lot of people around you will consider you a threat, including your boss. And they can undermine all your efforts…So, stay neutral.

But is there any scenario where you can reveal your intentions regarding climbing the career ladder? Yes, there is.

If you are moving to a new company, and you are not so much concerned about really leaving your current employer, and you are just sitting with the representatives of this new company in an interview to hear what they will say, then you can reveal your career growth intentions.

In this case, maybe you can reach a better agreement with them. Maybe they can offer you a better, higher job or tell you that your road is paved for a higher position. And in this case, you can document this in your contract with them later.
